Green Policy - The Green House on the Hill
We try to monitor energy consumption  to decrease if possible.
We endeavour to evaluate and implement  energy saving practices e.g. guest fridges and towel rails switched off and rooms  unheated when vacant.
Our guests can help by turning off lights, TV s and other appliances when not in use.
Heated towel rails  are left off for guests to choose if they require them or not.
Most light bulbs have been changed to low energy compact fluorescent bulbs
We use Energy efficient Heat exchangers...cool in Summer, warm in winter.
Guests  towels are not changed daily except on request.
Unheated towel rails are available.
Guests are encouraged to use cool water wash for their own laundry (in machine!!).
Appliances are not left on standby when the rooms are vacant.
All laundry is line dried whenever possible. Tumble-dryer is kept for emergencies only.
Appliances are cleaned and serviced regularly to ensure maximum efficiency.

Water Conservation
Water saving practices are in place - we use a front loading washing machine and only operate the dishwasher and washing machine when full.  Toilets are fitted with half flush button and all sinks have plugs. Showers rather than baths!

Other re-use,reduce, recycle policies
Where possible items no longer required are donated to local good causes - I replace our linen and towels regularly and give the old ones away via 'Trade Me'(online auction).

We strive to use Local organic produce and 'Buy New Zealand made' products whenever possible.
We grow some of our own produce and compost our kitchen waste.

The premium coffees  that we use are certified as organic & 'Fair Trade'

Minimising Waste
 Dispensers for toiletries
(shampoo/ shower gel/soap) are used in bathrooms. Single use items are not used to cut down on waste.
We reduce the use of office consumable where possible,re-use A4 paper when only used on one side, save electronic copies instead of paper ones.
All kitchen scraps are composted. The compost is then added to our veggie garden.
Tins, glass, plastics, paper and cardboard are all recycled .Bins provided for guest use.
Wherever possible items are purchased in bulk to reduce packaging.

I'm sure we can do better - so any suggestions you may have would be welcome!

Thank you for being 'green', for bothering to go the extra distance. Good to know that the laundry is washed in environmentally safe products and the cleaning leaves no nasty chemical smells. Nice touch having Organic Shampoo and Body wash.
Pleased you didn't change the towels every day to save washing and great to have the recycle box.
Beautiful decor. It was great staying here; also the homemade cookies were 'value added'.
Loved waking in the morning to the sound of the Tui and Bellbird and the peace and quiet.
